Vision correction options to eliminate glasses have become plentiful and readily available for those who suffer the limitations that eyeglasses present. The option of LASIK Eye Surgery has brought freedom from the hassle of glasses to millions of people throughout the world. While in the early 1990’s patients were concerned about possible risks and complications of LASIK, time, experience and technology improvements have reduced these potential events by a wide margin. Still, LASIK Surgery is indeed eye surgery and requires careful evaluation by a skilled LASIK surgeon in order to produce consistent and successful results.

Anyone contemplating Laser Eye Surgery of any type must fully understand what is and what is not possible in terms of eliminating glasses. First, LASIK is a form of vision correction for DISTANCE vision ONLY. Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are types of refractive errors that primarily impact your ability to focus at distance. These eye conditions are mainly due to the cornea being either too steep, to flat or unequal in curvature-and LASIK Eye Surgery is thus performed on the cornea. Another type of refractive error is called Presbyopia. Presbyopia is a loss of flexibility of the Crystalline Lens inside your eye resulting in a loss of focusing ability with an inability to see things within arms length or up close. LASIK Surgery can be used to help see things clearly for intermediate distances such as computer vision, and for reading by using a technique called monovision LASIK whereby one eye is corrected for near and one eye is corrected for distance-however it may not eliminate the need for eyeglasses for close and intermediate vision. Thus Presbyopia is a problem of the Crystalline Lens and is better managed using other vision correction options. So, LASIK can provide freedom from the hassle of glasses by eliminating their use for distance vision, but in all likelihood LASIK will require that you wear glasses when you are in your 40’s and beyond.

LASIK Eye Surgery has some practical limitations regarding the amount of correction that can be achieved with safety, efficacy and predictability of results. For patients who have a nearsighted correction above 8-10 diopters it may be more appropriate to have a type of lens implant called a phakic lens implant. A phakic lens implant such as the Visian® Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) can be placed in front of the natural Crystalline Lens and readily correct high degrees of nearsightedness or myopia. Even for people with slightly lower degrees of myopia, the Visian® ICL can be used if there are other contraindications to LASIK such as an anatomically thin cornea or extreme dry eyes that might preclude satisfactory results with LASIK Surgery.
